Local conditions

What Maryland Homes and Weather Do to Appliances

Humid summers

Sticky July air makes worn fridge gaskets sweat, keeps front-load washer seals damp, and pushes garage freezers past what they were built for.

High-rise living

Downtown Bethesda and Silver Spring towers mean loading docks, elevator bookings, front-desk sign-in and stacked washer-dryers in tight closets.

Gas in the kitchen and laundry

Many homes here run ranges and dryers on natural gas. Any gas connection we disturb gets leak-checked before we leave.

Old houses, new kitchens

1920s colonials and 1950s ramblers with remodeled kitchens, and larger homes with built-in refrigeration and wall ovens that are costly to swap out.

On the day

What Happens When the Technician Arrives

After you call or book online and a time is set, each visit moves through the same five stages. Booking details are on the About page.

  1. 1

    Testing on site

The technician checks the appliance along with what feeds it (power, water, drain, gas, venting) and narrows it down to the part that has actually failed.

  2. 2

    A plain explanation

You're told what broke and, where it can be seen, why. Ask to see the part; we're happy to show you.

  3. 3

    One price

A quote for the repair that was just explained. If the part has to be ordered, you hear that now, along with the expected wait.

  4. 4

    Your decision

Approve it, ask more questions, or decide against it. No part is swapped and no work begins without your yes.

  5. 5

    Repair and a test cycle

The part, matched to your model number, is installed, and we run the appliance through a cycle before packing up.

Repair or replace

We'll Say So When It Isn't Worth Fixing

Most breakdowns are one worn part: a door switch, a drain pump, an igniter. Those are usually worth repairing. Some aren't. An older machine with a failing compressor or a control board that's no longer made may not justify the money, and you should know that before you spend it.

The math shifts with the appliance. A basic top-freezer fridge is easy to replace. A built-in column refrigerator or a double wall oven fitted to the cabinetry is a different story, since a new one may not fit the opening. Either way you'll have the diagnosis, a repair price and our honest opinion, and the choice stays yours.

Read our guide to the repair-or-replace decision

The cause, not just the part

A new dryer element fails again behind a clogged vent. Drains, supply lines and venting are checked alongside the appliance.

Parts that fit your model

Manufacturer parts when they can be had. If an equivalent is the only option, you're told before it's installed.

No brand to answer to

We're independent, so one visit can handle a builder-grade washer and a column refrigerator in the same house.

Logistics sorted at booking

Parking, the building's rules, pets, who's letting us in: those questions come up on the phone, not on your doorstep.

FAQ

Questions People Ask Before Booking

The questions that come up most often. Anything not covered here, ask us when you call, or add it to the booking form's notes field.

Have a different question?

Tell us what make it is and what's going wrong. A few things can be settled over the phone, and anything else gets looked at during the visit.

To 11 ZIP codes in Montgomery County and Prince George's County, grouped into 4 areas: Bethesda & Chevy Chase; Potomac; Silver Spring; College Park & Hyattsville. That is the whole list. If your ZIP isn't on it, we aren't booking visits there, and we'd rather tell you that on the phone than take an appointment we can't keep.

Service areas and ZIP codes →

Go by the ZIP code. The post office puts Wheaton, Glenmont, Four Corners, Colesville and White Oak under a Silver Spring mailing address, so the town name on an envelope doesn't settle much. Type your ZIP into the search box on this page and it opens the right one.

Yes. When you book, tell us whether the building wants the elevator reserved, whether the technician should sign in with the concierge or the management office, and where a work vehicle can park, since many garages have a low clearance. If management needs anything from outside contractors ahead of time, mention it then so we can see whether it can be arranged before the day.

According to FoodSafety.gov and the USDA, food in an unopened refrigerator stays safe for roughly four hours. A packed freezer lasts around 48 hours and a half-empty one around 24. When the power returns, check the breaker panel and any GFCI outlet the fridge is plugged into, then allow several hours for it to cool back down. A fridge that is still warm after that deserves a visit, where the controls, fans and start components get tested.

What to check after an outage →

Humid air slows down drying inside the machine. Water left in the folds of the door gasket and in the drain pump area turns sour between loads. Prop the door and the dispenser drawer open after the day's last load, wipe the gasket, and clean the pump filter every so often. If the smell comes back fast, or you see standing water after a cycle, the drain side may be partly blocked and is worth a look.

Not necessarily. Most household refrigerators are built for a room at normal indoor temperature, and an unconditioned garage in a Maryland summer can run far hotter than that. The owner's manual lists the room-temperature range your model is designed for. If the fridge struggles indoors too, or the manual says the garage is within its range, a part has probably failed and a diagnosis makes sense.

Yes, and electric ones. A lot of homes here cook and dry on natural gas from Washington Gas. If you ever smell gas, don't look for the leak yourself. Get everyone out of the house, then call Washington Gas's emergency line or 911 from outside. Call us after the leak has been made safe.

By testing the appliance first. The technician works through it at your home until the failed part is identified, then quotes the repair. You approve that figure before any part is swapped. Phone quotes aren't something we do, since a single complaint, like an oven that won't heat, can trace back to several different parts.

Yes. If the appliance is worn out, the part has been discontinued, or the repair would come close to the price of a replacement, you'll hear that at the diagnosis. Built-in refrigerators and wall ovens often justify more than a basic freestanding unit, because replacing them can mean cabinet work.

Repair or replace: how to decide →

Call the manufacturer first. We're independent, with no manufacturer's authorization behind us, and outside work can complicate a warranty claim. Once that coverage has ended, or the maker declines the claim, we're glad to take it on.

Brands we work on →

That depends on the week's schedule and where you are among our areas, so we won't promise a window here. Get in touch and you'll be offered an actual appointment. Let us know if water is leaking or a freezer full of food is warming, so we understand what's at stake.

Book a visit

A Photo of the Label Is a Good Start

The make, the model number and a short description of the problem are enough to set up a visit. The model sticker is usually inside the fridge wall, on the dishwasher door edge, or under the washer lid. If you're in a building with a loading dock or a front desk, tell us that too, and we'll plan around it.
