Bethesda & Chevy Chase

About repairs in Bethesda & Chevy Chase

Two very different kinds of home share this part of the map. Downtown Bethesda keeps adding apartment and condo towers around the Metro, so plenty of visits start at a front desk and end in a compact kitchen several floors up. A few blocks away, Chevy Chase and the older Bethesda neighborhoods are single-family streets where a 1920s colonial can stand next to a house finished last year, one with its washer in the basement and the other with a laundry room beside the bedrooms.

Bethesda is unincorporated, with no city hall of its own; Montgomery County provides its services. Chevy Chase is a patchwork. Several small incorporated municipalities, among them Chevy Chase Village, the Town of Chevy Chase, Martin's Additions, Chevy Chase Section Three, Chevy Chase Section Five and North Chevy Chase, sit beside streets that belong to no town at all. Downtown Bethesda is apartment and condo towers along Wisconsin Avenue and Woodmont Avenue, with more high-rises at Friendship Heights on the District line. Around them are single-family streets: Chevy Chase houses from the streetcar-suburb decades after 1890, established neighborhoods like Westmoreland Hills, Sumner and Wood Acres, and the bigger wooded lots of Burning Tree and Bradley Hills. A great many of the original houses have been torn down and replaced with larger new ones.

Communities and ZIP codes in Bethesda & Chevy Chase

Downtown Bethesda and Woodmont Triangle (20814): The high-rise core around the Bethesda Metro station, Bethesda Row and the restaurant blocks of Woodmont Triangle, with single-family streets on its edges. The NIH campus and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center sit just up Wisconsin Avenue and Rockville Pike.

Chevy Chase (20815): The planned streetcar suburb laid out along Connecticut Avenue by the Chevy Chase Land Company from 1890, now divided among small incorporated villages and towns and unincorporated streets, along with the apartment towers of Friendship Heights and neighborhoods such as Somerset, Kenwood and Rollingwood.

Westmoreland Hills, Sumner, Springfield, Wood Acres and Brookmont (20816): Settled single-family neighborhoods off Massachusetts Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard, heading toward the Potomac, where original houses and new builds now share most blocks.

Burning Tree, Bradley Hills, Wildwood and Ashburton (20817): The western and northern side of Bethesda, from the large wooded lots of Burning Tree and Bradley Hills near River Road to Wildwood and Ashburton off Old Georgetown Road, plus part of Cabin John.

Booking a visit in Bethesda & Chevy Chase

Tower visits go through building management. Most buildings want contractors signed in, some keep insurance paperwork on file for vendors, and anything large moves by service elevator and loading dock, so tell us the building's rules and whether a van fits its garage. On the house streets parking is usually simple, except close to downtown and Friendship Heights, where curb space is metered or restricted.

Laundry here is usually in a closet inside the unit in the towers, a basement in the older Chevy Chase and Bethesda houses, and an upstairs laundry room in most of the rebuilt ones.

What we're called about in Bethesda & Chevy Chase

Counter-depth and panel-ready refrigerators, compact and stacked laundry, and induction or smooth-top cooking in the condos. In the houses: built-in refrigeration, wall ovens, pro-style ranges, second dishwashers and laundry rooms sitting over finished ceilings. The older colonials add basement washers and dryers with long vent runs.

Refrigerators here run from panel-fronted built-ins in rebuilt Chevy Chase and Bradley Hills kitchens to counter-depth units squeezed into condo galleys off Wisconsin Avenue and Woodmont Avenue.

Laundry might be a stacked pair in a downtown Bethesda condo closet, a basement set under a 1920s Chevy Chase colonial, or an upstairs laundry room in a large house built on a teardown lot.

High-rise dryers usually exhaust into a long building duct, while in the older houses of Chevy Chase and Westmoreland Hills the dryer tends to vent through a basement wall close to the ground.

Gas from Washington Gas is common in the older houses, the condos lean toward electric and induction, and many rebuilt homes carry a pro-style range or a stack of wall ovens.

Condo and apartment towers downtown

Downtown Bethesda's residential towers mostly arrived with their appliances already fitted: panel-ready or counter-depth refrigerators, 24-inch dishwashers, stacked washer-dryers in hall closets and electric or induction cooktops. They were picked to fit tight openings, so a repair usually means easing a unit forward a few inches, not dragging it into the room.

Water is what management worries about. A leak in a laundry closet on one floor shows up in a ceiling below, which is why buildings ask who is working, when, and on what. We shut the water off before opening anything, and every connection we touched is checked under pressure before we pack up.

Teardowns, rebuilds and newer kitchens

Across Chevy Chase and the older Bethesda neighborhoods, many original houses have come down and larger ones have gone up in their place. The new houses tend to put the laundry on the bedroom floor, route the dryer duct a long way to reach an outside wall or the roof, and fill the kitchen with built-in refrigeration, a big range or rangetop under a hood, and sometimes a second dishwasher or a beverage center.

Equipment like that is meant to be fixed where it stands, since replacing a panel-fronted built-in means matching the cabinets around it. And a leak upstairs reaches finished ceilings quickly, so a drain pan under the washer and a shutoff you can reach without moving anything are worth having.

Big trees, summer storms and outages

Chevy Chase and the older Bethesda streets sit under mature trees, and summer thunderstorms bring limbs down onto power lines. The June 2012 derecho left much of the region without electricity for days. While the power is out, keep the refrigerator and freezer closed: federal food-safety guidance gives a shut refrigerator about four hours, a full freezer about 48 and a half-full one about 24.

When the lights come back, an appliance with electronic controls sometimes wakes up confused. Cut its circuit at the panel, wait a minute or so, and restore it before deciding anything has failed. If a code remains, note it exactly and include it with your booking.

Water in Bethesda & Chevy Chase

Taps here run on WSSC Water, the public utility for nearly all of Montgomery and Prince George's counties, which draws from the Potomac and Patuxent rivers. Minerals in any tap water are left behind where it evaporates, so ice-maker fill valves, refrigerator filters and dishwasher spray arms slowly scale up over the years. In the towers, a washer that fills slowly is as likely to have a partly closed unit valve as a failing inlet valve.

FAQ

Questions People Here Ask Us

The questions that come up most often. Anything not covered here, ask us when you call, or add it to the booking form's notes field.

Have a different question?

Tell us what make it is and what's going wrong. A few things can be settled over the phone, and anything else gets looked at during the visit.

No. Bethesda is unincorporated, so its services come straight from Montgomery County. Parts of Chevy Chase are different, with several tiny incorporated villages and towns that have their own governments. None of that changes a repair, although a condo board or homeowners' association may set its own rules on contractor hours and parking, and we'd like to know about them.

Rarely. The pump, door lock, valves and most controls on a stacked pair are reached from the front or top with the machines in place. Tub bearings and some suspension work are the exceptions; if the pair has to leave the closet, you'll hear that before any work so the building's elevator can be booked.

All of it: Downtown Bethesda and Woodmont Triangle (20814); Chevy Chase (20815); Westmoreland Hills, Sumner, Springfield, Wood Acres and Brookmont (20816); Burning Tree, Bradley Hills, Wildwood and Ashburton (20817).
