Vulcan Repair in Houses, Townhomes and Condos

Most Vulcan equipment fails the way heavy commercial cooking gear always has: a pilot that won't hold, a thermocouple at the end of its life, a thermostat that has drifted, a blower motor worn out by heat. We repair it independently and are not a factory-authorized Vulcan agent, so equipment still under Vulcan's warranty should go through Vulcan or your dealer first. Otherwise, we diagnose the problem in your kitchen, explain it, and quote the repair for your approval before work begins.

Condos & high-rises
Many buildings want a loading-dock slot, an elevator booking or a sign-in at the desk. Mention those rules at booking so the visit fits them.
Stacked laundry
Washer-dryer stacks in closets and hall nooks often have to come out of the space to be worked on. Measurements or a photo help us prepare.
Older houses
A new appliance in a house built decades ago can be let down by the outlet, gas line, drain or vent behind it. We test the supply as well as the machine.
Tenants & owners
A renter can book the visit. We report the fault and the quote to the owner or property manager, whose approval comes before any repair.
Humid summers & garages
Sticky summer air makes fridges sweat and front-loader gaskets smell, and a garage fridge can struggle in the heat. Some of that is upkeep, not a failed part.
A straight answer
If fixing an older unit makes little sense, you will hear that from us, along with which part gave out.

How a Repair Visit Works

01

Book the Visit

Call or use the form. Name the make and describe the fault; a model number, if handy, speeds up parts.

02

Find the Fault

At your place, the technician checks the appliance and whatever feeds it (power, water, drain, gas or venting) until the cause is clear.

03

Approve the Price

You get a plain explanation and a price for the repair. The work starts only if you say yes.

04

Fix and Check

The new part is fitted and the appliance is run through a cycle, so you can see it working.

Vulcan

Built up the road in Baltimore

Vulcan traces its history to 1865, when it started as a stove company, and it is now a division of ITW Food Equipment Group, the Illinois Tool Works business that also includes Hobart. Its headquarters and a manufacturing plant are on North Point Boulevard in Baltimore. Besides the ranges, ovens, griddles and open-burner tops we service, Vulcan makes charbroilers, fryers, steamers, kettles and braising pans.

Vulcan ranges and convection ovens hold down cook lines in Bethesda's restaurant blocks, downtown Silver Spring, and along US 1 through College Park and Hyattsville. They also turn up in church halls, school and club kitchens, caterers' prep spaces and senior living dining rooms, sometimes in the same spot for decades. If your facility has check-in or vendor paperwork rules, tell us when you book.

Pilots, thermocouples and thermostats

Many Vulcan ranges light their top burners from standing pilots, and the oven usually has its own pilot guarded by a thermocouple and a safety valve. The thermocouple produces a small voltage while the pilot heats it, and that voltage keeps the valve open. Clogged pilot orifices, drafts from the hood or a door, and worn thermocouples account for most pilot trouble.

Mechanical oven thermostats drift with years of use. A good number can be recalibrated; others are simply worn and need replacing. The freestanding convection ovens are more involved: a blower wheel moves the heat, switches in the door tell it when to run, and an ignition control lights the burner. If the blower quits, so does even baking.

Planning a repair around service

A range down on the line changes the whole menu, so tell us your hours and your rush periods when you book. The diagnosis will tell you whether the other burners and oven can stay in use during the repair, and roughly when a part should arrive. Grease and carbon cause a large share of commercial cooking failures, and if we spot a cleaning habit that would head off the next breakdown, we mention it.

A word about Vulcan equipment in homes

Some homeowners install a restaurant range at home. Commercial equipment usually has clearance, ventilation, gas supply and fire-suppression requirements that residential kitchens are not built for, and its listing may not cover home use at all. Our Vulcan work is focused on commercial kitchens.

Vulcan, product by product

  • Ovens: Vulcan convection ovens and the standard or convection ovens under its ranges. Ignition and pilot faults, thermostat drift, blower motors and door switches are the common calls.
  • Cooktops: Vulcan griddles and hot tops, gas-fired under thick steel plates. Uneven heat, pilots that won't stay lit and thermostat problems are the usual complaints.
  • Stoves: Open-burner range tops on Vulcan restaurant ranges. Pilots going out, clogged burner heads and weak or yellow flames are what cooks report.
  • Ranges: Vulcan restaurant ranges combining open burners, griddle or hot-top sections and ovens. Pilots, thermocouples, safety valves, thermostats and door hardware make up most repairs.

Getting Vulcan parts

Vulcan parts are sold through commercial foodservice parts distributors and through Vulcan's own network. Thermocouples, pilot assemblies, burners, thermostats, gas valves and blower motors for current and recent models are widely stocked. Some parts for older equipment have been superseded by newer versions. The data plate gives us the model and serial number to order from, and you get an honest estimate of the wait up front.

FAQ

Vulcan Repair Questions

The questions that come up most often. Anything not covered here, ask us when you call, or add it to the booking form's notes field.

Have a different question?

Tell us what make it is and what's going wrong. A few things can be settled over the phone, and anything else gets looked at during the visit.

They are sister brands. Both are part of ITW Food Equipment Group, which is owned by Illinois Tool Works. Vulcan makes cooking equipment and Hobart makes warewashing and food prep equipment.

Many Vulcan mechanical thermostats can be recalibrated. We measure the actual cavity temperature with our own instrument first. If the thermostat won't hold calibration or is worn, it's replaced.

Our Vulcan work is focused on commercial kitchens. Commercial ranges often have installation requirements that homes don't meet, so we'd want to discuss the installation before booking.
