Smeg Repair in Houses, Townhomes and Condos
People choose Smeg for the way it looks, but what breaks is the Italian engineering inside: gas burners with flame-failure thermocouples, ovens with cooling fans, fridges that drain defrost water through a tiny hole in the back wall. We work on Smeg as an independent company, not as a Smeg service center. While your appliance is still under Smeg's warranty, contact Smeg. After that, we diagnose it in your kitchen and give you a price before any work starts.
How a Repair Visit Works
Book the Visit
Call or use the form. Name the make and describe the fault; a model number, if handy, speeds up parts.
Find the Fault
At your place, the technician checks the appliance and whatever feeds it (power, water, drain, gas or venting) until the cause is clear.
Approve the Price
You get a plain explanation and a price for the repair. The work starts only if you say yes.
Fix and Check
The new part is fitted and the appliance is run through a cycle, so you can see it working.

Guastalla, 1948
Smeg was founded in 1948 by Vittorio Bertazzoni in Guastalla, a small town in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region, and the Bertazzoni family still runs it. Americans know it mostly for the rounded 1950s-style FAB refrigerator in pastel colors, but the company's catalog is much broader: built-in ovens, freestanding ranges, cooktops, dishwashers, wine coolers and microwaves.
Around Bethesda and Chevy Chase, Smeg tends to arrive with a kitchen renovation in an older house, where the owner wanted something with personality rather than another stainless slab. A FAB fridge fits a small kitchen in a 1920s colonial, and a Portofino or Victoria range often becomes the centerpiece of a remodel. Smaller Smeg pieces also turn up in downtown condos, where kitchens are compact and on display.
Italian details that decide the repair
Every Smeg gas burner has a flame-failure device. A thermocouple sits in the flame, and until it warms up, the knob has to be held in to keep the gas flowing. When a burner goes out as soon as you let go, the fault is usually the thermocouple or its position in the flame, not the gas supply.
Smeg ovens run a cooling fan that keeps going after the oven is off, protecting the controls and the cabinet. And most FAB refrigerators defrost the fresh-food section by letting frost melt off the rear wall into a small channel and drain hole. When that hole clogs, water collects under the crisper drawers.
Waiting on Italy
Everyday parts such as thermocouples, igniters, elements, fans and gaskets are generally stocked by Smeg's North American parts operation. The slow ones are the pieces that make a Smeg look like a Smeg (colored door panels, trim, handles) plus a few control boards, which sometimes travel from Italy. We look those up from the rating plate while we are in the kitchen, so you know the likely delay when you decide.
Smeg, product by product
- Refrigerators: FAB retro refrigerators and built-in models. Clogged rear drain holes, ice-packed freezer compartments, gaskets, thermostats and fans are the usual repairs.
- Dishwashers: Freestanding, built-in and fully integrated dishwashers. Clogged filters, anti-flood shutoffs, inlet valves, door hinge springs and heating faults come up most.
- Ovens: Built-in electric ovens and range ovens with multiple modes. We handle noisy convection fans, failed ring and bake elements, cooling fan faults and temperature problems.
- Microwaves: Built-in microwaves and combination microwave ovens. Typical faults: no heat, no convection heat, door switches and control panels that stop responding.
- Cooktops: Gas, induction and radiant cooktops. The classic Smeg complaint is a flame that dies the moment you release the knob; clicking igniters and induction zones that switch themselves off come next.
- Wine Coolers: Undercounter and built-in wine coolers. Most calls are a zone drifting warm, a noisy or stopped fan, a sweating door or a worn seal.
- Stoves: The cooking surface of Smeg's retro Victoria and pro-style Portofino ranges. Burners that won't stay lit, igniters that keep clicking and uneven flames are typical.
- Ranges: Ranges from 24 to 48 inches wide with gas, dual-fuel or induction tops. We replace flame-failure thermocouples, spark igniters, oven heaters, both oven fans and sagging door hinges.
Getting Smeg parts
Smeg runs its own parts supply for the U.S. and Canada, so thermocouples, fan motors, elements, igniters and seals are normally a routine order. Anything that is mostly about looks, like a pastel door skin or a chrome handle, and the rarer control boards, can be a long wait for a shipment from the factory in Italy. Your model and serial numbers settle which part fits, and the lead time is part of the quote.

Smeg Repair Questions
The questions that come up most often. Anything not covered here, ask us when you call, or add it to the booking form's notes field.
Have a different question?
Tell us what make it is and what's going wrong. A few things can be settled over the phone, and anything else gets looked at during the visit.
The flame-failure thermocouple needs a few seconds of heat to hold the gas valve open. Keep the knob pressed for several seconds after the flame appears, as the manual describes. If it still goes out, the thermocouple may be worn, dirty or pushed out of the flame, and we check it.
The defrost drain hole in the back wall is probably blocked. Frost melts off that wall and runs into the hole, and if it's clogged the water pools under the drawers. A pipe cleaner or the method in your manual usually clears it. If it keeps coming back, we check the whole drain path.
Working parts, the thermocouples and fans and elements, tend to be routine. Cosmetic pieces in a particular color and some electronics are the ones that can stretch into weeks. We look it up on the spot, so the wait is known before you say yes.
