Western Bethesda (20817) — 1 ZIP code
Western Bethesda · 20817

Repairs in Western Bethesda

20817 is the largest of the Bethesda ZIPs. It spreads west and north of downtown toward Potomac, on both sides of the Beltway, and it includes neighborhoods served by Bradley Hills, Burning Tree and Ashburton elementary schools, along with edges of Potomac, North Bethesda and Cabin John.

All of it is unincorporated Montgomery County. There's no city or town government, and the Bethesda on the envelope is a postal name rather than a municipality.

Most people here live in detached houses on generous, tree-covered lots: mid-century colonials, ramblers and split-levels, many expanded, and newer large houses where older ones were replaced. Townhouse and apartment communities fill in near the main roads. Garages are the norm, and so is a finished basement with a second refrigerator.

Where the laundry went

Older houses tend to keep the laundry pair downstairs, while in renovations and newer builds they've often moved upstairs. Tell us which floor the machines are on and whether they're side by side or stacked. If the dryer vent runs a long way to an outside wall, mention that too, because a long duct is high on our list whenever clothes come out damp.

Gas ranges and dryers

Washington Gas supplies natural gas in this part of the county, and a lot of 20817 kitchens and laundry rooms run on it. When a gas oven won't light, the igniter is usually the first suspect: it has to glow hot enough before the valve will open. A burner that clicks and never catches is more often a wet or dirty igniter or a misaligned cap.

If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call Washington Gas from outside before calling anyone else. We'll repair the appliance once the supply has been checked.

Finished basements and damp air

Basements stay damp through a Maryland summer, and the appliances down there feel it. A beverage fridge or wet-bar ice maker in a finished basement can frost up or drip, and a front-load washer kept below grade is prone to mildew in its door seal.

A dehumidifier helps more than any part we could install. Leave the washer door and dispenser drawer open between loads, and wipe the gasket now and then.

Machines that came with the house

When a house is built or fully renovated, its appliances usually arrive together and start to wear out around the same time. If the dishwasher is failing and the refrigerator's ice maker has started acting up too, book both on one visit and list the model numbers, so the right parts can be looked up in advance.

Questions About Repairs in 20817

The questions that come up most often. Anything not covered here, ask us when you call, or add it to the booking form's notes field.

Have a different question?

Tell us what make it is and what's going wrong. A few things can be settled over the phone, and anything else gets looked at during the visit.

Most of it is Bethesda, but the ZIP's western edge runs into Potomac and its northern part into North Bethesda. Postal names and community names don't line up exactly here. Every part of 20817 is on our list.

A slow ignition usually means a weak igniter, and it should be replaced before it fails completely. If you smell gas at any point, stop using the oven, leave the house and call Washington Gas.

Where they're available, yes, matched to your model number. When we use an equivalent part instead, we tell you that before installing it.

Repairs Across Bethesda & Chevy Chase

This ZIP is part of our Bethesda & Chevy Chase coverage in Montgomery County. When you book, add anything that affects getting in: where to park, a front desk that needs notice, or a tight stairway.

Condos & high-rises
Many buildings want a loading-dock slot, an elevator booking or a sign-in at the desk. Mention those rules at booking so the visit fits them.
Stacked laundry
Washer-dryer stacks in closets and hall nooks often have to come out of the space to be worked on. Measurements or a photo help us prepare.
Older houses
A new appliance in a house built decades ago can be let down by the outlet, gas line, drain or vent behind it. We test the supply as well as the machine.
Tenants & owners
A renter can book the visit. We report the fault and the quote to the owner or property manager, whose approval comes before any repair.
Humid summers & garages
Sticky summer air makes fridges sweat and front-loader gaskets smell, and a garage fridge can struggle in the heat. Some of that is upkeep, not a failed part.
A straight answer
If fixing an older unit makes little sense, you will hear that from us, along with which part gave out.

How a Repair Visit Works

01

Book the Visit

Call or use the form. Name the make and describe the fault; a model number, if handy, speeds up parts.

02

Find the Fault

At your place, the technician checks the appliance and whatever feeds it (power, water, drain, gas or venting) until the cause is clear.

03

Approve the Price

You get a plain explanation and a price for the repair. The work starts only if you say yes.

04

Fix and Check

The new part is fitted and the appliance is run through a cycle, so you can see it working.
