Sub-Zero Repair in Houses, Townhomes and Condos
If your Sub-Zero is still covered by the manufacturer, use that coverage: call Sub-Zero, not us. We're an independent repair service and have nothing to do with their factory program. Out of coverage, a Sub-Zero is about as good a repair candidate as a refrigerator gets. The box, the doors and the hinges are made to outlast several sets of fans and relays, so most breakdowns end with one part swapped. The price is agreed before the work starts.
How a Repair Visit Works
Book the Visit
Call or use the form. Name the make and describe the fault; a model number, if handy, speeds up parts.
Find the Fault
At your place, the technician checks the appliance and whatever feeds it (power, water, drain, gas or venting) until the cause is clear.
Approve the Price
You get a plain explanation and a price for the repair. The work starts only if you say yes.
Fix and Check
The new part is fitted and the appliance is run through a cycle, so you can see it working.

A Wisconsin company built around cold
Westye Bakke started Sub-Zero in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1945, and it remains a privately held family business. Wolf's residential cooking line joined in 2000 and Cove dishwashers followed in 2018, all under Sub-Zero Group, Inc. Refrigeration remains what the company is known for.
Almost every model is made to be built in, finished in stainless or hidden behind cabinet panels. So repair plans start from the same constraint every time: the unit is meant to stay in its opening.
Sub-Zero in Maryland homes
In Potomac, a Sub-Zero often came with the house, installed during construction in the 1980s or 1990s. Some homes have a second one in a basement bar or pantry. Across Bethesda and Chevy Chase, many older houses have been replaced by larger new ones, and those usually get current Classic or Designer units. Older 600-series built-ins are still humming away in plenty of kitchens too.
Condo towers along Wisconsin Avenue add their own steps: a loading dock, an elevator reservation, a sign-in with building management. Tell us about them when you book and the visit runs smoothly.
Dual refrigeration and the top grille
Sub-Zero's full-size units run what the company calls dual refrigeration. There are two compressors, two evaporators and two fans, one set for fresh food and one for frozen. It keeps odors and humidity apart, and it gives a diagnosis a head start, because a symptom on one side points at only that side's hardware.
The machinery for most full-size built-ins sits up top, over the doors, behind a louvered grille. It pulls in whatever is in the kitchen air, and in a home that cooks a lot that means grease as well as dust. A clogged condenser there is the single most common reason a Sub-Zero starts running warm, and cleaning it is part of every visit.
Where we'd advise against repair
Because a built-in has to match its opening and panels, repairing one usually costs far less than the alternative. There are two exceptions: a refrigerant leak in an older unit's sealed system, and a control board that is no longer manufactured. If we hit either, we lay out the repair price next to what a replacement would involve and let you decide.
Sub-Zero, product by product
- Refrigerators: Classic side-by-side and over-and-under models, glass-door PRO units and panel-ready Designer columns. Top-mounted condensers, fans, defrost circuits, water valves and door closers are the usual work.
- Freezers: Freezer columns and drawers and the bottom half of over-and-under units. Defrost circuits, evaporator fans, heavy-duty slides and built-in ice makers are the frequent calls.
- Ice Makers: Freezer ice makers in full-size units and standalone undercounter machines, with gravity or pumped drains. Scale, weak water supply, drain pumps and bin sensors are the typical faults.
- Wine Coolers: Undercounter wine storage and full-height wine columns, most with dual zones. Choked front ventilation, fans, zone thermistors and glass-door seals are the regular repairs.
Getting Sub-Zero parts
Sub-Zero parts come through the company's own distribution, which also supplies independent repair shops. For current models they're generally easy to get. Older series are another matter: some boards and sealed-system parts are slow, and a few can't be had at all. The rating plate, usually inside the cabinet near the top, gives us the model and serial, and we check the part against it before we give you a price. An equivalent part is always named as one.

Sub-Zero Repair Questions
The questions that come up most often. Anything not covered here, ask us when you call, or add it to the booking form's notes field.
Have a different question?
Tell us what make it is and what's going wrong. A few things can be settled over the phone, and anything else gets looked at during the visit.
Probably not. The condenser, fans, relays, valves, controls and most defrost parts are reached through the top grille or from inside the cabinet. Pulling a unit out is saved for a leak behind it or particular sealed-system work, and that is scheduled on its own.
Vacuum the condenser behind the top grille a couple of times a year, more in a kitchen with lots of frying or pets. Change the water filter when the unit prompts you. Models with an air purification cartridge need it replaced on the schedule in the manual.
Keep the doors shut. According to FoodSafety.gov, food in an unopened fridge stays safe roughly four hours; a packed freezer holds around two days, and one that's half full about one day. Once power returns, allow several hours for it to pull back down. If it doesn't, call us.
If the sealed systems are still tight, repair usually makes sense. Fans, relays, thermostats, defrost parts and gaskets remain available for many of them. A refrigerant leak or an unobtainable control changes the math, and we'll tell you plainly if we find one.
