Stand-Alone Ice Maker Repair
This page covers machines that do nothing but make ice: undercounter units, nugget ice makers and commercial ice machines. A fridge's built-in ice maker belongs on the refrigerator page.
Booking online works too. With the ice maker's model number in the form, we can check part availability before we come.
First the appliance and its location, then your contact details. We follow up to schedule.
How a stand-alone ice maker makes ice
Most clear-ice undercounter machines work like a small waterfall. A pump circulates water over a chilled plate or grid, where ice forms layer by layer and leaves most minerals behind in the water that drains away. When the ice reaches the right thickness, a hot-gas valve warms the plate, the slab or cubes slide into the bin, and the cycle starts over.
Nugget ice makers use an auger that scrapes flakes off a chilled cylinder and packs them into soft pellets. Commercial machines from Hoshizaki, Manitowoc and Scotsman work on the same principles at a larger scale, with water filters, sensors and controls that report faults.
Every ice maker drains. Melted ice and purge water go to a floor drain by gravity, or a drain pump lifts it to a sink or standpipe. A clogged hose or a dead pump leaves water nowhere to go, and many service calls turn out to be a drain problem rather than anything in the ice-making parts.

Ice maker symptoms and likely causes
Check the water supply and the drain first. Most problems show up at one end or the other.
- No ice at all
- Water supply off or kinked, clogged filter, failed inlet valve, machine left in clean mode, bin sensor stuck
- Slow production
- Hot room or blocked airflow, dirty condenser, scale on the evaporator plate, low refrigerant
- Water on the floor
- Drain pump failure, kinked or clogged drain line, blocked bin drain, loose inlet fitting
- Cloudy, thin or soft cubes
- Scale buildup, filter overdue, weak water pump, ice thickness sensor
- Ice melts in the bin
- Normal on many undercounter models, whose bins aren't refrigerated; faster melting points to a hot room or poor door seal
- Runs but stops harvesting
- Hot-gas valve, harvest sensor, control fault
- Error light or code
- Water supply, drain, temperature or harvest faults, depending on the brand
Checks you can do yourself
- Make sure the water supply valve is open and the line isn't kinked behind the unit.
- Change the water filter if it's past its interval.
- Vacuum the front grille and give the machine room to breathe; many undercounter units breathe in and out through that front grille.
- If the unit has a drain pump, listen for it running as ice melts, and check the drain line for kinks or a sag that holds water.
- If cubes are cloudy or production has dropped, run the manufacturer's cleaning cycle with the cleaner it specifies.
Before you touch anything: Unplug the unit and close the water valve before pulling it out of the cabinet. If water is leaking near an outlet or the drain pump, turn off the breaker first. Use only the cleaner your manual names; the wrong chemical can damage some evaporator plates.
When to book ice maker service
- The water is on and the filter is fresh, but the machine still won't make ice.
- Water keeps appearing on the floor or in the cabinet below.
- The drain pump hums, cycles constantly, or doesn't run.
- Production stays low after a cleaning cycle.
- An error light or code returns after a reset.
What an ice maker repair visit involves
The technician looks at the water supply and drain first, then watches a freeze and harvest cycle, testing the water pump, inlet valve, hot-gas valve and sensors along the way. Scale on the evaporator plate is cleaned or noted. Refrigerant problems are the last thing checked.
The diagnosis and quote come first, and no work happens without your go-ahead. Parts are matched to the model and serial number.
Repair or replace an ice maker?
Drain pumps, water valves, sensors and water pumps are routine, reasonably priced repairs. A compressor or sealed-system problem on a lower-priced unit may cost nearly as much as a new machine, which we'll point out.
Built-in units from Sub-Zero, U-Line or Perlick are expensive to replace and fit specific cabinet openings, so they're often worth repairing. Countertop nugget machines usually aren't worth a major repair.
Why Book Us for Ice Maker Repair
Supply and drain first
Many ice maker calls come down to water getting in or getting out, so those are checked before anything else.
Parts by model and serial
Pumps, valves and sensors are ordered to your machine's model and serial number, with manufacturer parts where they're available.
Honest advice on small units
If a countertop or low-cost machine isn't worth fixing, we say so up front.

Ice Maker Repair in Houses, Townhomes and Condos
Undercounter ice makers are common in basement bars in Potomac and in the larger Bethesda houses, usually from Sub-Zero, U-Line or Perlick, and many drain through a small pump. Every ice machine collects mineral scale from its water over time, and a house on a private well can add sediment to the mix. In summer, a unit in a warm room or with a blocked front grille makes far less ice. Restaurants and bars along Route 1 in College Park and Hyattsville depend on commercial machines.
How an Ice Maker Repair Visit Works
Book the Visit
Tell us the kind of ice maker (refrigerator, undercounter or commercial) and whether it makes no ice, little ice or bad ice.
Find the Fault
The water supply is checked first: valve, filter and line. Then freezer temperature, the ice maker's controls, and any scale inside.
Approve the Price
You get a plain account of what stopped production and what fixing it costs, and you decide whether to go ahead.
Fix and Check
After the fix we run a fill and harvest cycle, or show you where the next batch will appear, before we leave.

No. If your ice comes out of the fridge door or drops into a bin in the freezer compartment, see the refrigerator page. This page is for machines built only to make ice.
Most undercounter ice makers drain all the time. With a drain pump, water pools in the cabinet once the pump dies or its hose clogs. With gravity drainage, the usual culprit is a hose that rises somewhere along its run, or a floor drain that can't keep pace. Unplug the unit and close its water valve until it's fixed.
Follow the schedule in your manual. Scale builds up over time from any water supply, and cloudy cubes or slowing production are signs a cleaning is due. Many manufacturers also call for sanitizing the bin and water path.
On many undercounter clear-ice machines, the bin isn't refrigerated, so ice melts slowly and the machine makes more to replace it. That's by design. If the ice melts quickly, check the room temperature and whether the door is sealing.
Yes, including Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, Scotsman and Ice-O-Matic. Before booking, copy down the model and serial from the rating plate on the machine.
