AGA Repair in Houses, Townhomes and Condos

The AGA was designed in Sweden in the 1920s by the engineer Gustaf Dalén and has been made in Shropshire, England, for most of its life. Since 2015 the brand has belonged to Middleby, the American foodservice equipment group, through its purchase of AGA Rangemaster. The name covers two quite different appliances, the cast-iron heat-storage cooker and the conventional AGA range cooker, and we repair both with no factory affiliation. A cooker still covered by AGA's warranty should go to AGA. Beyond that, we look it over in your kitchen, tell you what's wrong and price the work before starting.

Condos & high-rises
Many buildings want a loading-dock slot, an elevator booking or a sign-in at the desk. Mention those rules at booking so the visit fits them.
Stacked laundry
Washer-dryer stacks in closets and hall nooks often have to come out of the space to be worked on. Measurements or a photo help us prepare.
Older houses
A new appliance in a house built decades ago can be let down by the outlet, gas line, drain or vent behind it. We test the supply as well as the machine.
Tenants & owners
A renter can book the visit. We report the fault and the quote to the owner or property manager, whose approval comes before any repair.
Humid summers & garages
Sticky summer air makes fridges sweat and front-loader gaskets smell, and a garage fridge can struggle in the heat. Some of that is upkeep, not a failed part.
A straight answer
If fixing an older unit makes little sense, you will hear that from us, along with which part gave out.

How a Repair Visit Works

01

Book the Visit

Call or use the form. Name the make and describe the fault; a model number, if handy, speeds up parts.

02

Find the Fault

At your place, the technician checks the appliance and whatever feeds it (power, water, drain, gas or venting) until the cause is clear.

03

Approve the Price

You get a plain explanation and a price for the repair. The work starts only if you say yes.

04

Fix and Check

The new part is fitted and the appliance is run through a cycle, so you can see it working.

Stored heat versus a normal range

A heat-storage AGA has no thermostat knob for each oven. One heat source warms a heavy iron core. That core feeds several ovens and a pair of lidded hotplates on top, and each oven's temperature comes from how close it sits to the source.

In 2015 AGA stopped selling the classic always-on design in North America and moved to controllable models that can be turned down, or have sections switched off, when they aren't needed. Those carry more elements, switches and electronics than the older cookers. AGA-branded range cookers are something else again: several ovens, a gas, dual-fuel or induction top, and faults much like any European range.

The kitchens that have one

An AGA is a deliberate choice, usually the centerpiece of a big kitchen. Around here that means an older Chevy Chase or Bethesda house renovated with a farmhouse kitchen, or a large Potomac home where the cooker was picked before the cabinets were.

Maryland summers matter to an AGA owner. A cooker that radiates warmth is welcome in January and less so in a humid August, which is one reason the controllable models appeal here.

Cold before we open it

Cast iron holds a remarkable amount of heat, and most of the parts we'd touch sit right against it. For internal work, the cooker has to be turned off well ahead, sometimes the evening before. We give you the timing when we book, so it's cool when we arrive and back in use as soon as possible.

Parts from across the Atlantic

Many AGA parts start in the UK and reach the US through AGA's North American distributor. Burners, elements, thermostats and igniters for current cookers can usually be found. Older castings, lid assemblies and controls are slower, and some are no longer made. The data plate on the cooker tells us exactly what to order, and you get a realistic wait time up front.

AGA, product by product

  • Ovens: Roasting, baking and simmering ovens on cast-iron cookers, plus the fan ovens and conventional ovens on AGA range cookers. Weak heat sources, elements, thermostats, fans and door catches.
  • Cooktops: Boiling and simmering plates under insulated lids on cast-iron models, and gas or induction tops on range cookers. Slow plate recovery, worn lids, ignition and induction faults.
  • Stoves: The whole AGA as owners live with it: a cooker gradually losing heat, a gas flame that soots or flickers, or an electric model slow to come up to temperature.
  • Ranges: AGA range cookers in dual-fuel, gas and induction versions with two or three ovens. Fan oven elements and motors, spark ignition, flame-failure devices, thermostats and door glass.

Getting AGA parts

Most AGA parts are made in Britain and come to the US through the brand's distributor. Burners, elements, thermostats and igniters for current models are normally available. For older cookers, castings, lids and controls can take a long time, and a few have been discontinued. We work from the data plate, fit genuine AGA parts whenever they can be had, and say clearly if a non-AGA equivalent is the only way forward.

FAQ

AGA Repair Questions

The questions that come up most often. Anything not covered here, ask us when you call, or add it to the booking form's notes field.

Have a different question?

Tell us what make it is and what's going wrong. A few things can be settled over the phone, and anything else gets looked at during the visit.

Not on a classic heat-storage cooker; staying hot is how it keeps the ovens and plates ready. Controllable models can be set lower or have parts turned off. What does deserve a call is the whole cooker running noticeably cooler than it normally does.

It depends on the model and the repair, and for a heat-storage cooker it can mean the night before. We give you the timing when we book, so the iron is cool enough to work on safely.

Both. A range cooker has conventional burners, fan-assisted ovens and electronic controls, so it is diagnosed like any other European-built range.

Often. The basic design changed slowly over decades, so a lot of parts still fit. A few castings and controls for early models are gone. We check your cooker specifically before quoting.
