Microwave repair in Riverdale & New Carrollton
When counter space is scarce, as it is in most postwar galley kitchens here, an over-the-range microwave frees up the counter and serves as the vent above the stove. Some vent outside through an old hood duct, while others recirculate through a charcoal filter. Apartment kitchens may use a countertop unit plugged into an outlet shared with the coffee maker and toaster.
Safe diagnosis of a microwave that hums but doesn't heat
A microwave's high-voltage capacitor can stay charged after the unit is unplugged, so it is discharged before any testing begins. We then check the door interlock switches, since one misaligned switch can blow the line fuse or prevent the oven from starting. With the door system verified, we test the high-voltage diode, the capacitor and the transformer windings, then the magnetron's filament and its insulation to ground. A turntable that spins and a light that works with no heat usually points to the diode or magnetron. Erratic keypads or displays lead us to the membrane switch and the control board. On over-the-range units, vent fan motors and their switches are checked separately.
Vent fans over a gas range
If the microwave sits above a gas range, its vent fan carries heat and grease away from the burners. Clean or replace the grease filters regularly, and if the fan runs on its own, it may be the built-in heat sensor protecting the electronics from a burner left on high.

Tell us what make it is and what's going wrong. A few things can be settled over the phone, and anything else gets looked at during the visit.
A fuse that blows when the door closes almost always means a failed door interlock switch, often the monitor switch. Replacing only the fuse will usually blow it again. We test all the door switches and their alignment, then replace the fuse along with any switch that has failed.
